The ECI is in its crucial phase!
Dear friends of the ECI,
We are now in the crucial final phase for developing a citizen-friendly regulation to implement the European Citizen’s Initiative (ECI). The European Parliament and the Council, working in co-decision, are currently examining the regulation.
There are several events planned over the coming months, in Brussels,
Austria and Germany, to discuss how exactly we can create a citizen-friendly ECI regulation. Please contact the organisers directly for more information:
- May 8th and 9th: ECI Summit at Salzburg University (Austria)
- May 10th: ECI-expert meeting in the EU-Commission’s representation in Berlin with representatives of NGOs, academia and EU-institutions (Germany)
- May 12: ECI hearing organised by the Green Group in the European Parliament (Brussels) More info to follow
- Around June 10th: another ECI-hearing in the European Parliament (Brussels) Details to be confirmed.
The Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats (S & D) in the European Parliament sponsored an interesting hearing on the ECI on April 15th. At this time, we met with Commission Vice President Sefcovic and gave him our amendments to the proposed ECI regulation. The most important concrete outcome of the conference was a request by S&D for a hearing on the ECI in the European Parliament’s Committee on Constitutional Affairs (AFCO).
It is now up to the European Parliament to suggest amendments to the Commission’s proposed ECI regulation. We will therefore concentrate our energies on lobbying Members of European Parliament (MEPs) and European Parliament party groups.
Please help us by contacting your MEP to ask for a citizen-friendly ECI regulation. We will soon add to this website a list of points to emphasize in contacts with MEPs. In the meantime, please refer to our press release of March 31st.
