Was the Stop Vivisection ECI a Successful Exercise in Participatory Democracy?
The ECI Stop Vivisection has published the lessons learned from its successful ECI. Although the Initiative succeeded in gathering the required one million signatures, the European Commission ultimately rejected the proposal. At the same time the initiative is also complaining about massive bureaucratic hurdles inherent in the ECI rules that need to be reformed. Nevertheless, the initiative reports on positive effects and says that some of the lessons learned from the Initiative may well be relevant to the revision of Directive 2010/63/EU on the protecton of animals used for scientific purposes, due to take place by 2017.
