Save the date: 5 December 2013. Brussels. “An ECI that Works!”

August 30, 2013 News

We warmly invite you to save the date of Thursday, 5 December 2013 to participate in a full day workshop in Brussels to explore what can be done to ensure that the European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) works for organizers and citizens. This could include both better practical support and user-friendly regulatory changes. This workshop will be held at the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) in Brussels. Workshop discussions will also help shape the content of a companion publication, to be published in early 2014.

By 5 December 2013, the ECI instrument will be nearing its two year anniversary and the first ECI campaigns will have completed their one year signature collection period. Thanks to the ECIs you have launched, we now have very valuable information from practical experience to analyze. Many of you have noted weaknesses in the ECI rules, as well as experienced problems with ECI support tools, such as the online signature collection software.

The regulation implementing the ECI will be up for review by the European Parliament and Council in early 2015. Now is the perfect time to begin to prepare for this review and develop recommendations based on the real-world experience of ECI organizers and advocates like yourself.

Based on your practical experience with the ECI, you have become the most valuable and knowledgeable stakeholders in the field of EU participatory democracy. We would thus very much appreciate your presence on 5 December 2013 in Brussels!
