A citizens-driven European convention – mapping campaigns and developing synergies

At a time when democracy in the European Union is backsliding, more and more citizens realize that the financial crisis is not only about EU currency, financial markets and banks but about the future of the European project and democracy as such.

These tremendous effects of the financial crisis in Europe and the fact that top European decision-makers are bound by a “no alternatives” rhetoric have brought back on the agenda one of the strongest instruments for change in the European Union: The European Convention.

While Art. 48 of the Treaty on the EU guarantees the participation of representatives of national governments, parliaments and the EU Commission there is a strong need to explore how a future convention could be further democratized through the direct participation of European citizens in the convention process.

Today’s technological tools and experience with gathering collective intelligence and implementing collective decision-making procedures allow for a modern transnational and participatory European convention-making process.

This workshop will be about a citizen-driven and participatory convention process and invites you to participate in the alliance building process for a European Convention from the bottom-up. A special focus is on mapping existing or planned convention campaigns and projects and about creating synergies.

This workshop is facilitated with the support of the network-partners of the online-platform and part of a long-term series of workshops on the subject.
