Pioneering participation: The reform of the ECI as a starting point for a more participatory European Union Join our workshop during the ECI DAY!
On April 10th we will co-organize a workshop with Bertelsmann Foundation on European citizen participation during the ECI DAY 2018 at the European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. In case you are not able to attend, you can join us via the livestream!
Ordinary citizens feel alienated by the Brussels’ political process – more than ever before. The Lisbon Treaty aimed at making the EU more democratic. But most Europeans still cannot see how they can become part of EU politics. What can and should the EU do beyond ECI-reform? What are innovative participatory methods that would bring the Union effectively closer to its citizens?
These questions will be discussed during our workshop on April 10th (15:00-17:00 CET) with the following list of confirmed speakers:
- Valérie Gomez-Bassac, member of the French National Assembly, rapporteur for the citizens’ consultation on the remaking of Europe (Consultations Citoyennes pour la Refondation de l’Europe – find it here)
- Kalypso Nicolaïdis, professor of International Relations, Director of the Centre for International Studies, University of Oxford, known for her work on the concept of European demoicracy (literally: rules of the peoples)
- Niccolò Milanese, co-president, European Alternatives, co-author of the recent article: ‘Time to elect a European constituent assembly without asking anyone’s permission’ (find it here)
- Guillermo Martínez Suárez, member of the European Committee of the Regions, Minister of the Presidency of the Principality of Asturias, rapporteur of the EU Citizenship Report 2017 (find it here)
Beyond the contributions from our speakers, we look forward to inviting our participants to join the discussion in a highly participatory and experimental manner! The registration for the ECI DAY is now closed, so in case you are not joining us in person, you can attend the workshop online via the livestream!
