Citizen Participation for a More Democratic European Union

Political observers continue to debate the meaning of the recent decision by the majority of British voters to leave the European Union. While the UK’s relationship with the EU has always been atypical, voters expressed a frustration that is shared by many across the continent with opaque, elite-led policy making.

Fortunately, there are solutions.

On 5 May 2016, The ECI Campaign co-organised a conference at the University of Liverpool “Democratic Participation in a Citizens’ Europe: What Next for the EU?” to explore diverse ways to better involve citizens in the EU. Participants concluded that a more democratic EU is possible, even within the current EU legal framework.
